Welcome to the Sacred Abode of Maa Vaishno Devi
Katra, situated at the foothills of the holy Trikuta Mountains in the Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir, is the base camp for the revered pilgrimage to Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Ji. Every year, millions of devotees traverse the 12 km trek from Katra to the holy Bhawan at an elevation of 5,200 feet.

Helicopter, Battery Car & Ropeway Guidelines
1. Katra to Sanjichhat Helicopter Flight
Helicopter flights operate from Katra Helipad to Sanjichhat Helipad between sunrise and sunset (weather permitting). Flight duration is just 5–8 minutes. From Sanjichhat, pilgrims walk approximately 2.5 km downhill to Bhawan (or hire a palki/pony). Important: Helicopter tickets must be booked exclusively through the official SMVDSB website (maavaishnodevi.org) 60 to 120 days in advance. Beware of unauthorized scam websites promising fake VIP helicopter tickets.
2. Electric Battery Car (Ardhkuwari to Bhawan)
Eco-friendly battery cars operate between Ardhkuwari and the Bhawan via the newer Himkoti route. Priority is given to senior citizens (60+ years) and differently-abled devotees. Tickets can be booked at the Ardhkuwari ticket window or online on the SMVDSB portal.
3. Bhawan to Bhairon Ghati Passenger Ropeway
The steep 1.5 km climb from Bhawan to Bhairon Ghati is made effortless by the modern Swiss-engineered passenger ropeway. The cable car whisks pilgrims up in just 5 minutes for a nominal board fee (approx. ₹100 round trip per passenger). Tickets are purchased directly at the Bhawan ropeway counter.
Yatra Packing Checklist & Best Practices
- 👟 Comfortable Trekking Shoes: Wear well-broken-in sports shoes with good grip. Avoid brand-new footwear to prevent blisters.
- 🧥 Warm Layering: Even in summer, evenings at Bhawan (5,200 ft) can get cool. In winter (November to February), heavy woolens, thermal inners, gloves, and monkey caps are essential.
- 🆔 Original Photo ID Cards: Mandatory for all passengers for RFID card collection and helicopter security checks.
- 💊 Basic First Aid & Pain Relievers: Carry crepe bandages, pain relief sprays, band-aids, and your personal prescribed medicines. Free SMVDSB medical dispensaries are available every kilometer along the track.
- 📱 Postpaid Mobile Connection: Prepaid mobile SIM cards issued outside Jammu and Kashmir do not work in J&K due to telecom security regulations. Ensure you carry a postpaid SIM (Jio, Airtel, or BSNL) or procure a local J&K SIM at Katra.
